Last December ABC-CBN management has given the youth oriented show "Shoutout" a mainstay to improve their performances, the smanagement has given them 1 month to do it. but it only takes two weeks for the management to decide the faith of the show. and last Feb 11 was the last episode of the said show.

the objective of this program was supposedly to show the people what are the good characteristic of the Filipino youth now. but the show was failed to achieve this and because of this reason the ABS-CBN management was forced to cancel the show.

Manila (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) - The Philippines football team is gunning for no less than a comfortable victory against Mongolia in the first leg of their AFC Challenge Cup duel in Bacolod City, and the Azkals aren't burdened by the high expectations heaped on them by the public.

Borromeo was responding to comments made by Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose Cojuangco Jr., who said that Filipinos should not expect too much from the Azkals, despite their semifinal finish in the AFF Suzuki Cup last December.

Cojuangco's statements on the radio show Usapang POC that the Azkals match with the Mongolians was getting too much publicity went viral Friday (February 5) and drew passionate comments from fans online.

The Azkals continued their buildup Thursday when they beat a Central Philippine University side bannered by Koreans, 4-1, in a match watched by 3,000 fans at the Panaad Stadium.

Simon Greatwich opened the scoring with a 35-yard strike in the 17th minute, before Ian Araneta doubled the lead before halftime.

The Koreans pulled a goal two minutes after the restart, but Borromeo scored on a header from a corner kick in the 49th minute, before new recruit William Guerridon wrapped up the scoring in the 65th minute.
Filipino-Dutch midfielder Jason de Jong was inserted into the starting eleven a day after arriving from the Netherlands.

The Azkals missed star striker Phil Younghusband, who was sidelined by a hamstring problem on both legs. Younghusband said he should be ready for the showdown with Mongolia on Wednesday (February 9).
Meanwhile, two Filipino-Danish standouts Dennis Cagara and Jerry Lucena arrived in Manila Friday to process their passports, a requirement needed for them to play for the Azkals in future matches.

China launches strict new Internet controls

BEIJING — China's technology ministry moved to tighten controls on Internet use Tuesday, saying individuals who want to operate Web sites must first meet in person with regulators.

The state-sanctioned group that registers domain names in China froze registrations for new individual Web sites in December after state media complained that not enough was being done to check whether sites provided pornographic content.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said that ban was being lifted, but would-be operators would now have submit their identity cards and photos of themselves as well as meet in person with regulators and representatives of service providers before their sites could be registered.

It said the rule was aimed at cracking down on pornography.

China has the world's biggest online population, with 384 million Internet users. The government operates the world's most extensive system of Web monitoring and filtering, blocking pornographic sites as well as those seen as subversive to communist rule.

The new regulations come as the government is in talks with Google Inc. about whether the U.S.-based Internet giant will be allowed to continue operating in China after saying in January it would no longer cooperate with the country's Web censorship. The two sides have given no details of the status of their discussions.

No audit before poll winners are proclaimed

Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairman Jose Melo on Wednesday rejected the idea of conducting the random manual audit before the declaration of the winners in the May polls, saying that it will only cause unnecessary delays.

“(We don’t want) a simple audit (to) deter proclamation," Melo said in a press briefing.

The poll body chief issued the statement after some groups asserted that the random manual audit be done right after the election results are transmitted and before the winners are proclaimed. (See: More voting machines should be audited to ensure polls' credibility)

Section 24 of Republic Act 9369 requires a random manual audit to be conducted in one precinct per congressional district in each province and city.

“Any difference between the automated and manual count will result in the determination of root cause and initiate a manual count for those precincts affected by the computer or procedural error," it further said.

But Melo said that conducting the audit before the proclamation would cause a great delay because the auditors would still have to “reconcile" the marks on a ballot that were recognized and not recognized by the Precinct Count Optical Scan (PCOS) machine.

“Magkakaroon ng variation yan, magdedebate, madedelay yan. Ang mark na ganyan, bibilangin ng manual, pero hindi binilang ng makina, sino paniniwalaan mo (There will definitely be a variation, triggering debate, which would delay everything. “If we are going to delay the proclamation because of a simple concern of one machine,bakit pa tayo nag-automate (why did we automate at all)?" he said.

Earlier, the National Citizens’ Movement for Free Elections (Namfrel) and the Consortium of Electoral Reforms (CER) also asked the poll body to increase the number of voting machines that will undergo auditing.

For many households trying to improve their finances, tossing out pitches from the bank has become almost automatic. But in recent weeks, Chase has been fanning special letters out to consumers with an offer that it urges them not to refuse.

"Your debit card may not work the same way anymore, even if you just made a deposit. Unless we hear from you," the message, emblazoned in large red type, warns. "If you don't contact us, your everyday debit card transactions that overdraw your account will not be authorized after August 15, 2010 -- even in an emergency," with "even in an emergency" underlined for emphasis.

As the government cracks down on the way banks charge fees for overspending on debit cards, the industry is mounting an aggressive campaign aimed at keeping billions of dollars in penalty income flowing into its coffers. Chase and other banks are preparing a full-court marketing blitz, which is likely to include filling mailboxes with various aggressive and persuasive letters, calling account holders directly, and sending a steady stream of e-mail to urge consumers to keep their overdraft service turned on.

Starting this summer, banks must get consumers to agree, or "opt in," to a service covering purchases on a debit card when there is not enough money in their account. The Federal Reserve has ordered the same restriction for banks that want to let people withdraw more than their balance at an automated teller machine. Many banks now automatically provide such coverage for fees of up to $35 or more.

So many people now dip their balance below zero that banks generated an estimated $20 billion from overdraft fees on debit purchases and A.T.M. transactions in 2009, according to Michael Moebs, an economist who advises banks and credit unions. All of this revenue is potentially at risk, since these are the two areas that the new Federal Reserve regulations cover. (Banks generate an extra $12 billion by covering checks and recurring bills; under the new rules, they can still cover those and charge fees without customers' consent.)

Over the last decade, these fees have become an increasingly important source of income for banks as consumers have turned to debit cards to pay for a wide variety of their purchases, whether monthly bills or a pack of gum. (Many banks also offer less controversial overdraft programs in which consumers sign up to cover shortfalls in their checking account by pulling money out of a savings account or a credit card.)

The persuasion campaigns, which are just getting under way, come at a precarious time for many banks and credit unions as they scramble to find new revenue streams amid an economic downturn and new laws and regulations that threaten profitability. For instance, new credit card laws that went into effect Monday limit banks' ability to raise interest rates on existing balances.

Given the billions at stake, consultants are urging banks and credit unions to hire them to help. "Your fee income will take a substantial 'hit' if you don't start getting consumers to 'opt-in' for POS/ATM overdrafts NOW!" Mike Sobba, president of Strunk & Associates, a financial institution advisory service, warned banks in a pitch on the company's Web site.

Some are even lobbying banks to focus their pitch on the minority of customers who are responsible for the vast majority of overdraft fees. According to a Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation study in 2008, 93 percent of overdraft fees come from the 14 percent of people who exceed their balances five times or more in a year.

"Doesn't it make sense to try and protect this revenue stream and encourage these customers to opt-in?" said Eric Wittekiend, strategic adviser at Raddon Financial Group, in a report aimed at banks and credit unions. "Right now I'm favoring an aggressive opt-in strategy to protect as much revenue as possible," he said.

Another consultancy, Pinnacle Financial Strategies, advises an "Opt-in Total Solution" program for banks and credit unions trying to stem losses in overdraft fees. Pinnacle's briefing paper urges an "account holder identification process" to zero in on consumers who pay such charges repeatedly and persuade them to keep the status quo.

The banks' marketing campaigns range from subtle to alarming. In recent weeks, Chase has tested several direct-mail pitches to see whether an assertive or alluring tone will drive people into a branch to sign up for overdraft coverage. "Watch your mailbox so you can say 'Yes' to continue Chase debit card overdraft coverage," read one note, a toned-down version of an alternate letter warning consumers that their debit card might not cover unexpected emergencies, like a highway tow.

A spokesman for Chase said: "We have begun to reach out to customers and are encouraging them to sit down with a branch banker to make sure they understand overdraft services, which can be confusing. We want them to make an informed decision."

When consumers get to the bank, another pitch awaits. Mark Sorenson went into a Dallas branch of Bank of America (BAC) to turn off the overdraft function on his debit card recently and got a distressing response.

Beware, his banker cautioned. If Mr. Sorenson used the card to buy gas, the station might place a hold on his account and he might not be able to fill up at all, even if he had enough money in the bank to cover a full tank.

"My impression was that it was something he'd been briefed on," said Mr. Sorenson, an architect who said he had tired of paying multiple fees when the bank automatically covered shortfalls on his debit card. "He was trying it out on me."

A Bank of America spokeswoman said that its efforts, including giving consumers a document called "Opting Out of Overdraft Coverage," were not meant to encourage customers to remain in overdraft services but to make sure they understood the complexity of the issue.

Rebecca BornÃ©, policy counsel for the Center for Responsible Lending, said banks still had "tremendous incentive to get as many consumers to opt in as possible." That is because new Federal Reserve regulations taking effect this summer would still allow banks to charge high fees for overdraft, with no limit on the number of times they impose the penalty.

Twinned with the blitz is a lobbying campaign in Washington by community banks and credit unions against several Congressional measures that would impose tough limits on overdrafts. They argue that their overdraft fees tend to be less than the large banks, and that overdraft provides a valuable service to customers, helping them overcome short-term money woes and saving them from the embarrassment of having a card rejected.

Several members of Congress have proposed legislation that would allow banks to charge just one overdraft fee a month, and six a year, and prohibit the reordering of transactions from largest to smallest to maximize fees. But while Democratic leaders insist overdraft legislation remains a priority, the bills have languished as lobbyists have pushed for delay and Congress focused on other financial issues.

"The ultimate strategy was not delay for delay's sake," said Steve Verdier, director of congressional affairs at the Independent Community Bankers Association. "The strategy was to ask Congress for enough time to explain the complexity."

Amid a growing public outcry over these fees, several large banks announced changes to their overdraft policies last year. Bank of America said it would not charge a fee when customers exceeded their balance by $10 or less per day and would limit overdraft fees to four per day. At the end of March, Chase is eliminating overdrafts for customers whose accounts are overdrawn by $5 or less and has already limited overdrafts to three per day.

But even with those changes, customers could still incur more than $100 in fees a day if they opt to take overdraft coverage.

At least one credit union is using the new Fed rules to try to differentiate itself from its competitors. On its Web site, the UW Credit Union in Madison, Wis., says, "While we expect some financial institutions may aggressively market the idea of a consumer 'opt in' within the boundaries of this regulation, we have no such plans."

Winter Olympic, The world's top skier fell and was disqualified during the slalom portion of the women's super combined event at Whistler this Thursday. Lindsey Vonn of team USA almost had its second Gold.

She had been leading after the downhill run earlier in the day, but a tough opening section of the slalom appeared to have her headed toward a silver medal before the fall. Germany's Maria Riesch, Vonn's best friend and longtime rival, had put the pressure on one run earlier with a blazing time; the world's No. 2 ranked skier was the eventual winner of the event.

Facebook tightens privacy on third-party programs

SAN FRANCISCO - Facebook gave users Wednesday more control over who gets to see video, virtual cards and other digital content shared using third-party programs at the leading social networking website.
Content sharing tools the site launched for profile pages in December are being extended to applications that outside developers make for the online community, according to Facebook engineer Ray He.
"Maybe you don't want all of your friends to see the humorous greeting card you just posted from an application," He said. "Now, you can set that post to be viewable only by certain friends."
In contrast, someone trying to rally support for a charity using a Causes application will be able to adjust privacy settings to spread posts as widely as possible.
"There are now granular privacy options that enable you to personalize the audience for each piece of content you share through applications," He said in a blog post.
Drop-down menus near lock icons in a Publisher tool on profile pages let people select sharing options ranging from "everyone" to "only friends" and "custom."
"These new controls give you the power to determine who sees the content you post to Facebook through any third-party application," He said.
Content posted through outside applications without specified sharing preferences will default to "Posts by Me" settings designated at the social networking service.
"You may also start to see additional prompts in applications asking if you'd like to set privacy for certain pieces of content that differ from your default setting," He explained. "The choice is yours."
Facebook's more than 400 million members are required to dictate settings with a software tool that lets them specify who gets to be privy to each photo, video, update or other piece of content uploaded to the website.
The tool lets Facebook members determine accessibility to posted content, such as status updates or pictures in categories designated "Friends," "Friends of Friends," "Everyone" and "Customized."
Facebook members can select privacy settings for each post by using lock icons next to "share" buttons on profile pages.

President Barack Obama says the emergency legislation he signed a year ago to help the struggling economy has saved at least 2 million jobs and avoided a deeper recession.

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama hailed Wednesday's one-year-old economic stimulus law as a solid accomplishment that staved off another severe economic depression and kept up to 2 million Americans on the job.

Still, with millions still out of work and losing patience, Obama acknowledged that to them, "It doesn't yet feel like much of a recovery."

The Obama administration has been feeling considerable political pressure of late, in part because of the stunning upset of its favored candidate in the special election to fill the Senate seat vacated by the late Sen. Edward Kennedy, a Democrat who held the post for decades. Earlier this week, a leading Senate Democratic moderate, Indiana's Evan Bayh, joined an increasing number of lawmakers who have announced they will be leaving Congress. This has come amid rising public anger over joblessness, high deficits and Washington partisanship.

More Pinoys realize they lack info on automation—survey

More Filipinos are beginning to realize that they don’t know enough about automated elections, pollster Pulse Asia revealed on Wednesday, nearly four months before the May 10 elections.

Seven out of 10 Filipinos (71 percent) said they have little to no knowledge at all about how poll automation works, an increase of 10 percentage points from last October’s 61 percent, the pollster said. (See: 6 out of 10 Pinoys remain clueless about automation – Pulse Asia)

Pulse Asia cited results of a survey held from January 22 to 26 this year involving 1,800 registered voters.

The number of Filipinos who remain clueless about automation is still the largest in socioeconomic class E (very poor), where three out of 10 respondents said they have no knowledge at all regarding the automated polls.

Only two out of 10 respondents said they have sufficient amount of knowledge about automation, while an even smaller number – eight percent of those surveyed – said they have a great deal of knowledge of what will take place during the May polls.

WHISTLER, British Columbia (AP)—If this is how Lindsey Vonn skis with a bruised shin, then the rest of the field has no chance.

Vonn showed no signs of discomfort when she won the Olympic downhill by more than half a second Wednesday, with childhood rival and American teammate Julia Mancuso taking a surprise silver medal.

“This is everything I’ve wanted and hoped for,” Vonn said, her voice choked with emotion. “I gave up everything for this.”.
